Siamese Juggling: Two-Person Cascade
Two students stand shoulder to shoulder with an arm around each other's waist; each uses only their free hand, and together they become one juggler doing the cascade. Students work on shared coordination, communicating rhythm, and trusting a partner.
How to play
- In pairs, stand shoulder to shoulder with the inside arm around your partner's waist; the outside hands are free (2 min).
- With one scarf: one student's hand tosses it diagonally up and the partner's hand catches it; go back and forth 10 times (3 min).
- With two scarves: when the first one peaks, the partner tosses the second; saying "one, two" out loud keeps the rhythm (4 min).
- With three scarves in a cascade: whoever holds two starts; count how many tosses in a row you get and record your best (5 min).
- Pairs who master scarves move on to two and then three juggling balls, with lower, quicker tosses (4 min).
- Switch sides so each student uses the other hand, then share what helped you stay in sync (2 min).
Rules
- Each student uses only the outside hand; the other stays on the partner's waist.
- Keep talking: the tosser says "go" or counts the beat.
- If something drops, let go of each other to pick it up, then reset.
- Pairs work at least 10 feet away from other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Work with only one and two scarves and toss higher.
Standard
Three-scarf cascade, moving to balls after ten tosses in a row.
Harder
Three-ball cascade while walking forward and backward together.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the cascade seated side by side on chairs, or with one wheelchair and one chair.
- Shyness: let students choose partners, or allow just a hand on the shoulder instead of an arm around the waist.
- Skill level: advanced pairs try tossing behind the partner's back.
Learning goals
- Coordinate one-handed tosses and catches while sharing a pattern with another person.
- Communicate rhythm verbally and nonverbally.
- Work with a partner to beat a shared record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 39
- juggling balls: 39
Teacher tip
Most pairs toss forward instead of across on a diagonal; a tape mark on the wall above their heads helps. Switch partners midway if a pair gets stuck.
