Shrinking Field Keep-Away
A 5-on-5 soccer keep-away game on a field that shrinks every few minutes, using nested rectangles of different colored cones. Students practice keeping possession by adjusting support, spacing, and passing speed to the available space, and see how the game changes when space runs out.
How to play
- On each field, mark three nested cone rectangles: blue 100 x 65 ft, yellow 70 x 50 ft, and red 50 x 33 ft. Make 4 teams of 6 or 7; play 5 on 5 with one sub rotating (3 min).
- Play inside the blue rectangle. Every 6 passes in a row earns 1 point; the team counts out loud.
- After 3 minutes, blow the whistle and call the next color: play moves to the yellow rectangle without stopping. After 3 more minutes, it moves to red.
- In the red rectangle, with very little space, a point takes only 4 passes. Then go back to blue for 2 minutes to compare (11 min).
- Switch opponents and repeat only the yellow and red rectangles (2 min).
- Wrap-up for 2 minutes: what changed when the field shrank: support distance, touches, or speed?
Rules
- No tackling from behind and no sliding on the floor.
- A ball that leaves the active rectangle goes to the other team, which restarts with a kick-in.
- Safety: in the red rectangle, keep the ball on the ground and avoid hard shots.
Variations
Easier
The player with the ball has unlimited touches, and the defense plays one player short.
Standard
Five on five with three 3-minute rectangles.
Harder
In the red rectangle, players are limited to two touches.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a neutral on the edge of the rectangle, joins whichever team has the ball, and cannot be pressured.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored ball and tall, high-contrast cones for each rectangle.
- Fitness level: the blue rectangle can be played with less running, and the sub rotates in every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Keep possession by adjusting support distance to the space.
- Control and pass quickly when space gets tight.
- Analyze how space affects decisions in the game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 2
- colored cones: 48
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Set up all three rectangles before class so no time is lost. As the field shrinks, many students crowd the ball; ask for one support player on each side and one behind.
