Shoulder to Shoulder: One Cascade, Two Jugglers
Two students stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, and run one cascade together, each using only their outside hand. It forces them to coordinate and adjust their throws to a partner.
How to play
- With scarves: the pair stands side by side with inside arms around each other's waist and does a one-, two- and three-scarf cascade (6 min).
- With two balls: swap in an X between each person's hand, saying "go" on each throw (5 min).
- With three balls: a shared cascade, started by whoever holds two (7 min).
- Switch sides to use the other hand (4 min).
- Challenge: take five steps forward without breaking the cascade (3 min).
Rules
- Throws peak at eye level, between the two faces.
- Count throws out loud to stay in sync.
- If a ball drops, nobody blames anyone: just restart.
- Pairs stay spread out so they don't collide.
Variations
Easier
Stay with scarves or two balls.
Standard
Shared three-ball cascade.
Harder
Shared cascade while walking, or four balls, two each.
Adaptations
- Students with low vision: use scarves and have the partner call each throw.
- Wheelchair users: the partner gets down to their level, kneeling or sitting on a bench.
- Students uncomfortable with contact: skip the arm around the waist and just stand shoulder to shoulder.
Learning goals
- Match throwing rhythm with another person.
- Communicate during a motor task.
- Train the non-dominant hand.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 45
- juggling balls: 45
Teacher tip
This is great for students who can't cascade alone yet, because they only control one hand. Let them choose partners the first time.
