Shoulder Check Without Swerving: Read the Number
Riders roll down a narrow chalk lane and, as they pass a marker, look back over their shoulder to read a number a partner is holding up, without leaving the lane. This is the foundation of any safe lane change or left turn.
How to play
- Chalk three lanes 1 m wide and 30 m long, 3 m apart (2 min).
- Ride straight down the lane looking far ahead, at the end of the course, not at the wheel (4 min).
- Shoulder check: passing the middle cone, turn your head over your left shoulder and call out the number on the card a partner holds up behind you, outside the lane (7 min).
- Full maneuver: shoulder check, left-arm signal and move over to the next lane, like a lane change (8 min).
- Log: out of five tries, numbers read correctly and lane exits; pair discussion (4 min).
Rules
- Helmet buckled at all times.
- The partner holding cards stands outside the lane, 6 feet from the edge.
- Only one rider per lane, and lane changes happen only if the next lane is clear.
- If you lose balance while looking back, look forward again and brake.
Variations
Easier
Widen the lane to 1.5 m and only do the shoulder check, no lane change.
Standard
1-meter lane, read the number and change lanes with a signal.
Harder
Check over both shoulders while the partner shows two numbers in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited neck mobility: works on trunk rotation and discusses using a mirror.
- Hearing impairment: no spoken messages; everything is shown on visible cards.
- Nervous riders: first practice the shoulder check walking beside the bike.
Learning goals
- Look back while holding a straight line.
- Link the shoulder check, signal and lane change.
- Track personal progress with a simple log.

Teacher tip
If there are not enough bikes, ask the local police or city hall (many run bike safety programs with loaner bikes) or a cycling club, or let students bring their own with parent permission; with 10 bikes, work in groups of three that rotate. Students without a bike in that rotation hold up the cards or record the data.
