Shooting Clinic: Students Coach Another Group
Groups of four plan and lead a 10-minute mini-session on shooting technique for another group, with a goal, a drill, a BEEF cue and a way to measure improvement. Then they switch roles and each group evaluates how they were coached.
How to play
- Each group gets a planning sheet and picks a shooting goal (for example, elbow alignment or catch and shoot), a drill, a key cue and a five-shot pre-test and post-test (6 min).
- Shift 1: odd-numbered groups coach even-numbered groups at their basket; two students lead, one demonstrates and one records the test (10 min).
- Shift 2: roles reverse with the same group pairings (10 min).
- Evaluation: each coached group rates the clarity of the explanation, the organization and the feedback from 1 to 4 and discusses it with their coaches (4 min).
Rules
- The session lasts exactly 10 minutes, kept on the shared stopwatch.
- Coaches give one positive cue per shot.
- The drill they design cannot leave anyone waiting for more than 30 seconds.
- Every member of the coaching group has a role during the session.
Variations
Easier
The teacher provides three model drills and the group picks one and adapts it.
Standard
Open design of a mini-session with a goal, drill, cue and test.
Harder
The session has to include a two-drill progression and a final competitive challenge.
Adaptations
- Students anxious about public speaking: take the demonstrator or recorder role.
- Hearing impairment: coaches also prepare the cue in writing or as a drawing.
- Wheelchair user: the session they receive is adapted to their shot and the coaches include them in the plan.
Learning goals
- Plan a shooting teaching task with a goal and an assessment.
- Lead a group of classmates with clear instructions and positive feedback.
- Give constructive feedback on other students' work as coaches.

Teacher tip
Check the sheets before shift 1 to avoid drills with long waits. This works best after a few shooting lessons, once students already know BEEF.
