Shoe-on-the-Fist Turkish Get-Up
A step-by-step progression of the Turkish get-up, moving from lying down to standing and back with one arm locked toward the ceiling while balancing a sneaker on the fist. Students build bodyweight core and shoulder strength and stability.
How to play
- Pairs share a yoga mat. Each student takes off one sneaker; A lies on their back with the right arm straight up and the shoe balanced on a closed fist (2 min).
- Phase 1 (3 min): bend the right knee, roll up onto the left elbow, then the left hand, eyes on the shoe the whole time. Go back down. B checks that the arm stays vertical.
- Phase 2 (3 min): from the hand, lift the hips into a bridge and sweep the left leg underneath to a kneeling position. Reverse step by step.
- Phase 3 (3 min): from the knee, turn into a lunge and stand up with the arm still straight. Come down by reversing the path.
- Do each phase 3 times per side, then switch roles; B reads the name of each step out loud as a guide.
- Full movement (5 min): 3 slow get-ups per side, about 30 seconds each, alternating with the partner.
Rules
- Eyes stay on the shoe through the whole movement.
- The top arm stays locked and vertical; if the shoe falls, stop and reset.
- Safety: no weights or medicine balls, only the shoe, and 6 ft of clear space around each mat.
Variations
Easier
Work only through phase 1 or 2 with an empty fist and a wider base hand.
Standard
The full get-up with the shoe on the fist, 3 per side.
Harder
Pause 3 seconds in each position and close the eyes during the standing portion.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice phase 1 on the mat, from lying to elbow to hand, with partner assistance.
- Visual impairment: the partner calls each step out loud and touches the body part that moves next.
- Lower strength: no shoe and a slight bend in the top elbow.
Learning goals
- Link the phases of the Turkish get-up with control.
- Stabilize the shoulder and core while the body changes position.
- Coach a partner by reading a technical sequence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- students' own sneakers: 25
Teacher tip
Post the seven steps with pictures on the board and have students go very slowly; rushing makes the trunk twist.
