Shake and Settle Tension Release
Standing, students gently shake out the body segment by segment to slow music, then freeze when the music stops and notice what they feel. It's a traditional practice from qigong for letting go of built-up tension and settling into calm.
How to play
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and soft knees, spread out so no one touches.
- With the music on, shake the hands for 30 seconds, then the whole arms for 30 seconds, then the shoulders for 30 seconds, gently and without jumping (1.5 min).
- Add a light knee bounce that sends a shake through the whole body for 1 minute.
- When the music stops, stand still with eyes closed for 1 minute, noticing tingling, warmth, and pulse.
- Repeat a shorter round (1 min) and a final 1-minute stillness; close with one word describing how you feel (0.5 min).
Rules
- Shake gently, never jerk the head or neck.
- No jumping: feet stay on the floor.
- Total silence during stillness.
Variations
Easier
Shake only the hands and arms and keep the eyes open during stillness.
Standard
Do two rounds of segment shaking with stillness.
Harder
Extend the stillness to 2 minutes and journal the sensations afterward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shake whatever parts are mobile from a chair and do the stillness the same way.
- Hearing impairment: replace the music with a visible start and stop signal from the teacher.
- Shyness: have the group face the wall to reduce the feeling of being watched.
Learning goals
- Release muscle tension through gentle shaking.
- Notice body changes during the shift from movement to stillness.
- Learn a body practice from an Eastern tradition.

Teacher tip
It feels awkward at first, so do it with the group and have students face away from each other. The final stillness is the key part, so don't cut it short.
