Shadow General: Find Who Frees the Team
Capture the flag where each team has a secret general, the only player who can free the jail; if the opponents find and tag the general, the team loses rescues for a while. It adds deduction and bluffing to the chase.
How to play
- Hand out folded slips in each team: one says "general" and the rest are blank; nobody shows theirs (3 min).
- Explain the field and the key rule: two halves, a scarf in a hoop at the back and a two-hoop jail for each team; if a defender tags the general, the general says so and the team loses rescues for one minute (3 min).
- First half: anyone tagged on the enemy side goes to jail, and only the general can free prisoners with a high five; others can pretend to try, to throw the other team off (10 min).
- New deal and second half: each team gets one chance to call out who the other general is; a correct guess scores a point (10 min).
- Score and discussion: how did you protect your general and how did you bluff? (4 min).
Rules
- Nobody stays in jail for more than a minute: you walk out when it's up.
- Tag with a hand on the back or shoulder, without pushing.
- The general can't lie when tagged: they say "I'm the general."
- Slips stay hidden until the end.
Variations
Easier
Two generals per team, and guesses cost nothing.
Standard
One general per team and one guess.
Harder
The general secretly changes halfway: the teacher hands out a new slip.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: can be the general and set up away from the jail; frees anyone who comes over and touches them.
- Hearing impairment: the general is shown by a gesture agreed with the teacher, and game signals use a flag.
- Students uncomfortable with bluffing: can be the guess referee who holds the list of generals.
Learning goals
- Combine chase decisions with deduction.
- Cooperate to protect a key team role.
- Handle hidden information honestly.

Teacher tip
Without an active general, prisoners walk out after a minute, so nobody sits out for long. Common mistake: the general heads straight for the jail and gives themselves away; let teams discover that on their own.
