Setting from the Middle to Both Pins
The setter stands in the middle of the net and sends high sets to the left and right pins, where a teammate catches inside a hoop. Students practice setting from a balanced base, squaring up to the target, and reading the hitter's call.
How to play
- Groups of 6 per half court: a setter in the middle front, a passer in the back, a receiver in a hoop at each pin, and two waiting (2 min).
- The passer tosses or bumps to the setter; the setter sets high to the left pin and the receiver catches in the hoop (5 min).
- Then set to the right side, with a front or back set depending on where the setter is facing (5 min).
- Final phase (5 min): one pin receiver calls 'Ball!' and the setter must set to that player; the set counts if it lands in or on the hoop.
- Rotate clockwise every 6 balls so everyone sets. Record each student's successful sets (1 min).
Rules
- The setter always faces the left pin before touching the ball.
- Receivers catch without stepping out of the hoop; if they step out, the set does not count.
- Waiting players stay off the court behind the end line.
Variations
Easier
The passer tosses from 10 feet, and the setter may catch and release with setting form.
Standard
Forearm pass to the setter and a set to either pin based on the call.
Harder
The pin player jumps and hits a controlled attack instead of catching.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the pin receiver in the hoop or pass from a chair.
- Autism: preview the phases and rotation order on a card.
- Advanced students: pass farther from the net so the setter has to move to the ball.
Learning goals
- Set accurately to both sides of the net.
- Square the body to the target before contact.
- React quickly to the hitter's call.

Teacher tip
If sets are landing tight to the net, have setters aim about 3 feet off the net. Use both half courts at once so nobody stands around.
