Serve Receive Pass Ratings 0-3
Passers receive serves while a peer observer rates each pass from 0 to 3 based on how close it lands to the setting zone, just like volleyball teams do. Students practice forearm passing, observing with clear criteria, and improving from data.
How to play
- Explain the scale: 3 = perfect pass to the setter's spot, 2 = the setter has to move, 1 = only a free ball can be sent back, 0 = error or unplayable ball (2 min).
- Groups of 4 per half court: server, passer, target in the setting zone (marked with a cone), and an observer with a card (2 min).
- The server does 10 underhand serves; the passer bumps to the target, and the observer records each rating and the average (4 min).
- Rotate: server to passer, passer to target, target to observer, observer to server; complete all four rounds (8 min).
- Each student compares their average with last lesson's, and the observer gives one specific technique tip (4 min).
Rules
- The observer rates only what they see, with no comments about the person.
- Serve only when the passer is in a ready position.
- The target may take no more than one step to catch the pass.
- Cards go into a group folder for next lesson.
Variations
Easier
The server tosses with two hands from the 10-ft line.
Standard
Underhand serve from the end line and a 0–3 scale.
Harder
Overhand serve, and the passer must receive from a different zone every 3 serves.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the observer or passes tossed balls within reach.
- Autism: show the scale with drawings on the card so the rating is very concrete.
- Lower fitness level: the passer receives sets of 5 and rests during the rotation.
Learning goals
- Pass the serve to the setting zone with the forearms.
- Rate a partner's pass using an objective scale.
- Use data to set a goal for improvement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 12
- net: 1
- cones: 6
- cardstock rating cards: 25
Teacher tip
Practice the scale with two or three examples before starting so everyone rates the same way. The same sheet works as an assessment record for the unit.
