Sepak Takraw Kick Serve Target Zones
Groups of three practice the sepak takraw serve: one partner tosses by hand and the server kicks with the inside or top of the foot into target zones worth different points. Students build kicking accuracy and a consistent serving motion.
How to play
- Groups of three on badminton courts with a low net: a tosser beside the net, a server standing in a hoop 10 ft from the net, and a retriever on the far side.
- Teach the motion (2 min): plant foot inside the hoop, the tosser lofts the ball to hip height, and the server kicks it with the inside of the foot.
- The far court has three zones: hoops near the net (1 point), cones in the middle (2), and the back area (3). The retriever calls out the zone.
- Each student serves 6 balls per turn (4 min per round); then rotate server to retriever, retriever to tosser, and tosser to server. Play 3 rounds.
- Final challenge (4 min): each group adds up its points over 15 serves and tries to beat its first-round score.
Rules
- The plant foot stays in the hoop until contact; if it leaves early, the serve does not score.
- The retriever stays out of the ball's path until it has bounced.
- Kick below waist height: no high, straight-leg kicks.
- Each group keeps its own score honestly.
Variations
Easier
The server stands 6 ft from the net and any bounce inside the court counts.
Standard
Serve from 10 ft with three scoring zones.
Harder
Serve with the laces from 13 ft, and the retriever must trap the ball with the foot before a second bounce.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves by striking with the hand from a chair and scores the same points.
- Visual impairment: the tosser claps on release and a brightly colored ball is used.
- Higher skill: the server must call the zone before serving and only scores if they hit it.
Learning goals
- Perform a kick serve while keeping the plant foot steady.
- Adjust kicking power to the distance of the chosen zone.
- Analyze personal progress by comparing scores from each round.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft balls: 9
- low net: 4
- hoops: 16
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Ask tossers to release the ball to the same spot every time, since half the misses come from bad tosses. Line the groups up side by side so everyone serves in the same direction.
