Sepak Takraw 3v3: Server, Setter, and Striker
A modified 3v3 sepak takraw game with a light ball where each player takes a role: server, setter, or striker. Students work on striking with the foot, thigh, and head, cooperating within three touches, and rotating roles.
How to play
- Four badminton courts with the net at 1.5 m (about 5 ft) and a 1 m serving circle marked with cones at the back of each side; eight trios plus one rotating referee (3 min).
- Circle touches (4 min): the setter tosses by hand and the other two return the ball with the inside of the foot or the thigh; count consecutive touches.
- Serve: the setter, standing by the net, tosses the ball by hand to the server in the circle, who kicks it over the net.
- Each team gets three touches with no arms or hands, and one bounce between touches is allowed in class: anyone receives, the setter sets, the striker sends it over. Play games to 11 (12 min), switching roles on each side-out.
- Ladder rotation: winners move up a court and losers move down (3 min of changes and a short final game).
Rules
- No touching the ball with arms or hands, except the serve toss.
- No touching the net or stepping into the other court.
- Safety: no bicycle kicks or back-turned spikes; strike facing the net with the foot below chest height.
- One bounce between touches is allowed; two bounces in a row is a point for the other side.
Variations
Easier
Two bounces allowed between touches and an underhand thrown serve.
Standard
One bounce between touches, three touches, and a kick serve.
Harder
No bounces, and strikes only with the instep or sole.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays setter using hands, and the team gets an extra bounce.
- Hard of hearing: the referee signals points with an arm and role changes are shown with gestures.
- Lower skill level: starts as setter, who kicks the ball less.
Learning goals
- Strike with the inside of the foot, thigh, and instep with control.
- Cooperate within three touches to build an attack.
- Play all three team roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- light balls: 8
- nets: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
The rattan ball used in the real sport is hard: use light foam or soft plastic balls. Celebrate three-touch sequences even if they don't win the point, since rallies are short at first.
