Sensory Movement Story: Night in the Forest
A partner movement story where blindfolded students travel through a nighttime forest while a partner guides them through fabric tunnels, a river of mats, and jingling owls. Students develop body awareness, trust, and creative movement.
How to play
- Form pairs: a blindfolded explorer and a ranger who guides by the hand. Set up a fabric tunnel, a river of mats, and the owl clearing beforehand.
- The trailhead (2 minutes): the teacher narrates nightfall; explorers walk slowly, feel the ground, and duck under "low branches."
- Tunnel and river (6 minutes): half the class holds fabric at waist height while explorers crawl under; then they cross the river stepping from mat to mat as partners call "step" and "stop."
- Owls and wind (3 minutes): when the bells jingle, everyone freezes; then the ranger brushes the explorer's arms with a feather and the explorer moves like a leaf.
- The campfire (1 minute): explorers walk toward the teacher's voice and sit. Partners switch and repeat a short version (3 minutes).
Rules
- Rangers never let go of their explorer or make them run.
- Anyone who feels scared can remove the blindfold and continue.
- One pair at a time through the tunnel and river.
- Use feathers and fabric gently and never on the face.
Variations
Easier
Run the story with eyes open and dim lights, trying just one scene blindfolded.
Standard
The full partner story with a role switch.
Harder
Explorers move without hand contact, following only the partner's voice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: raise the tunnel for a wheelchair, mark the river with ropes on the floor, and express the wind with arms and torso.
- Autism or fear of the dark: preview the story with pictures, offer eyes open instead of a blindfold, and allow the ranger role only.
- Skill level: confident students narrate a scene or invent an obstacle.
Learning goals
- Explore surroundings through touch, hearing, and movement.
- Express feelings from a story through movement.
- Trust a partner and look out for them.
Equipment for a class of 25

- fabric pieces: 6
- jingle bells: 4

Teacher tip
Narrate slowly in a soft voice, because the calm mood is what makes it work. Have every scene set up before you begin.
