Senses Station Rotation
A five-station circuit where each group explores hearing, balance, body position, touch through the feet, and side vision with short challenges. Students discover how some senses help when another is missing.
How to play
- Set up five stations and form five groups of five. Explain them in 2 minutes.
- Hearing: one blindfolded student stands in a hoop while the others, 3 m (10 ft) away, take turns shaking a jingle bell and the student points to it. Balance: walk 5 steps along a long rope on the floor, first with eyes open, then closed.
- Body position: a partner places the arms of a classmate with eyes closed into a pose; after letting go, the classmate opens their eyes, repeats it, and they compare.
- Feet: blindfolded, cross a line of 6 hoops by feeling with the feet and say how many you stepped in. Side vision: staring at a fixed point, call out the color of a cone a partner brings in from the side.
- Each station lasts 3.5 minutes; on the whistle groups rotate clockwise. Wrap up for 2 minutes: which sense was hardest to do without?
Rules
- Whenever someone is blindfolded, a partner stays within arm's reach.
- Without sight, walk slowly with hands out front.
- Jingle bells are shaken, never thrown.
Variations
Easier
Use closed eyes instead of blindfolds and only four stations.
Standard
Five 3.5-minute stations, one challenge per sense.
Harder
Each station adds a task, such as answering while on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the balance task seated with a beanbag on the head, and feel the hoops with the hands.
- Visual impairment: the student leads the hearing station; side vision is adapted with sounds.
- Skill level: early finishers time classmates or invent a variation.
Learning goals
- Explore the body's perceptual abilities.
- Identify which senses help when one is missing.
- Look out for a classmate playing without sight.
Equipment for a class of 25
- blindfolds: 5
- jingle bells: 5
- hoops: 7
- colored cones: 6
- long rope: 1
Teacher tip
Keep the hearing and vision stations far apart so noise does not interfere. Name a captain in each group to tidy equipment before rotating.
