Senior Fitness Class: Design and Rehearsal
A service-learning project where groups design a gentle chair-based exercise class for a senior center and rehearse it with classmates who simulate age-related limitations. Students practice adapting exercises, safety, and warm, clear communication.
How to play
- Set 25 chairs in a circle and make 5 groups of 5. Each group gets a block: joint mobility, coordination with a ball, strength with a band, balance holding the chair, or a memory-and-movement game (1 min).
- Design (6 min): each group plans 3 exercises for its block with reps, a simple cue, and an easier version.
- Rehearsal (15 min): each group leads its block for 3 minutes with the whole class seated. Participants simulate a limitation the teacher assigns: stiff shoulders, poor vision, or reduced hearing.
- Between blocks, take 30 seconds for participants to say which exercise was hard to follow.
- Wrap-up (3 min): the class orders the five blocks into a full 30-minute class with calm music for the visit day.
Rules
- Every exercise is done seated or with one hand on the chair back.
- Safety: no fast neck rolls, no jumping, and no loaded overhead exercises.
- Speak slowly, face the group, and demonstrate every movement.
- Treat participants with respect and never talk down to them.
Variations
Easier
The teacher gives a list of exercises and each group picks and orders three.
Standard
Each group designs three original exercises for its block plus an easier version.
Harder
Each group also prepares a standing version with chair support for fitter participants.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes part fully since the whole class is seated, and shares their insight in the design.
- Visual impairment: leads with detailed verbal cues and touches the band to locate it.
- Higher fitness: serves as a support coach who checks posture.
Learning goals
- Design safe exercises adapted for older adults.
- Lead a block of a class with clear cues and demonstration.
- Value physical activity as a service to the community.

Teacher tip
If you can, invite a physical therapist or the senior center's activity director to review the class. Remind students to always ask about pain before starting.
