Self-Paced Juggling Practice Plan by Levels
Each student places themselves on a six-level juggling scale, from two scarves to the three-ball cascade, and runs their own practice. They record their catch count at the start and end to see how much they improve.
How to play
- Introduce the level sheet: 1) two scarves, 2) three scarves, 3) one ball hand to hand, 4) two balls alternating, 5) three-ball cascade with 10 catches, 6) cascade with 30 catches (3 min).
- Entry test in pairs: each student tries their level while the partner counts catches in a row (5 min).
- Independent practice: each student picks two drills from the next level and alternates 3 minutes of practice with 1 minute of shoulder rest (15 min).
- Exit test with the same partner and record the personal best on the sheet (5 min).
- Adjust the plan: which drill worked best and which one to repeat next session (2 min).
Rules
- Each pair practices in its own zone, about 10 feet from others.
- Pick up dropped balls without moving into another pair's space.
- Do not move up a level without reaching the required count on the test.
- Respect the rest breaks: shoulders get tired too.
Variations
Easier
The scale ends at the two-balls-alternating level.
Standard
Six levels with an entry test, independent practice and an exit test.
Harder
Students who already have the cascade add levels with tricks like the reverse cascade or columns.
Adaptations
- Limited use of one arm: uses the scale one-handed, tossing and catching scarves and balls with that hand.
- Visual impairment: uses balls with bells and low tosses, and the partner counts out loud.
- Low frustration tolerance: is encouraged to celebrate every personal best, even if it is just one more catch.
Learning goals
- Plan and self-manage practice of a new skill.
- Measure personal progress with a simple indicator.
- Improve hand-eye coordination with different objects.

Teacher tip
Homemade juggling balls made with balloons and rice work well if you are short. This sheet lets you track learning across several sessions.
