Sector Officials: Students Run the Throws
Three throwing stations (foam javelin, medicine ball shot and soft discus) run by students who rotate as safety official. The official gives the commands, controls the sector and measures; the others throw.
How to play
- Explain the official's role: flag up 'sector open', flag down 'closed', and measuring from the line (4 min).
- Three groups, one per station; each group names its first official (2 min).
- Throwing rotation: each student throws twice, then serves as official for one wave (16 min).
- Switch stations with the same system, cutting to one throw each to fit the time (6 min).
- Share-out: what's hardest about directing your classmates? (2 min).
Rules
- Only the official opens and closes the sector with the flag.
- If unsure, the official closes the sector and asks the teacher.
- Follow the official just like the teacher.
- The official is never in front of the line while the sector is open.
Variations
Easier
One station with the teacher standing next to the official.
Standard
Three stations with rotating officials.
Harder
The official also records each thrower's best mark and tells them quietly.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the flag is the main signal, not the voice.
- Shyness: can officiate with a partner who calls the commands out loud.
- Limited mobility: permanent official at one station, positioned at the line.
Learning goals
- Take responsibility for the group's safety.
- Give clear, respectful commands.
- Respect the decisions of a classmate who officiates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 5
- medicine balls: 5
- soft flying discs: 5
- cones: 15
- flags: 3
- measuring tape: 3
Teacher tip
Visit all three stations without taking over from the official; give corrections privately. Flags can be pinnies tied to a pole.
