Secret Tagger
An observation tag game: everyone jogs and high-fives while two secret taggers quietly tag people; when someone spots a tagger and calls them out, the tagger must race to the safe line while the whole class chases. Students practice observation, attention, and reaction speed.
How to play
- Mark a 20 x 20 m area with cones and a safe line 10 m beyond one side. Everyone closes their eyes and the teacher taps the backs of 2 secret taggers (1 min).
- On the whistle, everyone jogs around high-fiving anyone they pass. Secret taggers tag by gently touching someone's elbow without being noticed.
- A tagged player takes three more steps, says "I'm tagged!", jogs to the sideline, does 5 squats, and comes back in.
- Anyone who suspects someone raises a hand and names them. If they are right, the exposed tagger sprints for the safe line and everyone chases.
- If they are tagged before crossing, the class earns a point; if they make it, the taggers earn the point. A wrong guess means 5 squats.
- Each round lasts about 2 minutes; then choose new secret taggers. Play 5 or 6 rounds.
Rules
- Secret taggers tag with a gentle elbow touch, never a hit.
- You can only accuse by raising your hand and naming one person.
- In the final chase, tag on the back or shoulder; no grabbing or tackling.
- During the chase, no one may cut in front of the runner.
Variations
Easier
One secret tagger and a safe line 15 m away.
Standard
Two secret taggers and a safe line 10 m away.
Harder
Three secret taggers, and each must tag two people before they can be called out.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be a secret tagger or a detective accusing from the side; in the final chase they judge the safe line.
- Autism or shyness: the student can whisper their accusation to the teacher or team up with a classmate who speaks for both.
- Fitness level: in the final chase, the runner gets a 3 m head start or starts closer to the line depending on fitness.
Learning goals
- Observe classmates' behavior to make decisions.
- React quickly to start a chase or an escape.
- Follow the game rules honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Make sure nobody peeks while you pick taggers. The final chase involves everyone, so keep a clear path to the line and remind students that it's touch only.
