Secret Tactical Mission Game
A small-sided futsal game in which each team secretly draws a tactical mission to carry out while the other team tries to guess it. Students build their understanding of attacking and defending principles, team communication, and reading the opponent.
How to play
- Prepare 12 mission cards: play down the sidelines, press right after losing the ball, 5 passes before shooting, everyone drops behind midfield, look for the long pass, play zone defense...
- Set up two 100 x 65 ft fields with small goals and make 4 teams of 6 or 7. Each team draws a card, reads it in a huddle out of the opponents' sight, and makes a plan (4 min).
- Play 4 on 4 plus a goalie for 4 minutes with free subs; a goal is worth 1 point.
- On the whistle, each team names the mission it thinks the opponent had. If correct, the team that carried it out earns 2 points for making it obvious and the guessing team earns 1.
- Swap cards and opponents and repeat for 4 rounds (18 min).
- Wrap-up for 3 minutes: which mission worked best, and in what other sport would you use it?
Rules
- Cards are never shown or read aloud; teams use signals or code words.
- If a team ignores its mission, its goals that round count for half.
- Safety: no tackling from behind and no sliding on the floor.
Variations
Easier
Use only attacking missions and allow two guesses.
Standard
Four on four plus a goalie and four 4-minute rounds.
Harder
Each team draws one attacking and one defending mission.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts as sideline captain giving cues during subs, or plays goalie with a narrower goal.
- Autism or shyness: use picture cards and let the student start as an observer who notes clues.
- Fitness level: choose lower-effort missions, such as zone defense, and play short shifts.
Learning goals
- Identify attacking and defending principles in the opponent's play.
- Coordinate with teammates to carry out a shared plan.
- Transfer a tactical idea to other invasion games.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 12
- futsal balls: 2
- small goals: 4
- pinnies: 13

Teacher tip
The first round is usually chaotic because teams forget the plan; call a 20-second timeout halfway through. Laminate the cards to reuse in other units.
