Secret Rank Capture the Flag
A capture-the-flag game where each player carries a secret card ranked 1 to 5: when two opponents touch, they compare cards and the higher rank wins. Students practice strategy, weighing risks, memory, and following the rules.
How to play
- Mark a 40 x 25 yd field split in half. At the back of each half, put a hoop with a flag and an 'armory' cone with face-down cards. Two teams of 12 or 13 in pinnies (3 min).
- Each player takes a card without showing it. Ranks go from 1 to 5, plus two spies per team: a spy beats only the 5.
- On the whistle, play anywhere. When a player tags an opponent, both stop, show their cards, and the higher rank wins; on a tie, both lose.
- The loser walks to their armory, puts the card at the bottom of the pile, takes a new one, and returns. No one is ever out.
- A team wins the round by carrying the other team's flag to its own hoop. If the carrier is tagged, there is a duel: if they lose, the flag goes back.
- Play 5-minute rounds with 1 minute between them to discuss which opponents seem strong. Play 4 rounds.
Rules
- Show your card only to your duel opponent, then hide it again.
- No peeking at other cards or swapping cards outside the armory.
- Challenge by tagging the shoulder with an open hand; no grabbing or pushing.
- During a duel, both players stop and step aside to stay out of the way.
Variations
Easier
Use only ranks 1 to 3, with no spies.
Standard
Ranks 1 to 5, two spies per team, and a new card after each loss.
Harder
Add two 'bombs' that stay by their flag and beat every rank except the 1.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: guard the armory with your own card and challenge anyone passing within 2 yd.
- Visual impairment: use cards with large raised numbers, and opponents read their number aloud.
- Fitness level: play pauses at every duel; students who want more running can attack.
Learning goals
- Weigh risks to decide when to challenge and when to avoid.
- Remember opponents' ranks to plan as a team.
- Respect each duel's result and the card rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 28
- colored pinnies: 25
- flags: 2
- cones: 10
- hoops: 2
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards and make piles of 14 per team so there are spares. The most common cheat is peeking at the new card on the way back: assign one armory monitor per team.
