Seconds Bank: A Class Record of Combined Strength Holds
In pairs, each student picks a strength hold and a level, and their partner times how long they keep it with good form. All the seconds go into a class bank that's plotted on a graph and the class tries to beat it in later lessons.
How to play
- Core activation and explanation of three holds: front plank, side plank and wall sit, each with two levels (5 min).
- Round 1 in pairs: one student holds while the other times and calls out if form breaks; switch roles (5 min).
- Groups add up their seconds, and the class total goes on the poster-board graph (3 min).
- Round 2 with a different hold or level chosen by each student (5 min).
- Read the graph: today's total vs. last lesson, and a shared goal for next time (2 min).
Rules
- The clock stops when form breaks, not when you run out of strength.
- Only the class total goes on the graph, never individual times.
- Everyone picks a level they can do well.
- If your back or wrists hurt, stop and switch holds.
Variations
Easier
Holds from the knees and a maximum of 20 seconds per try.
Standard
Three holds with two levels and two rounds.
Harder
Three rounds with short rests and a fourth hold suggested by the students.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated isometric holds for arms or core, such as pressing hands together.
- Students with visual impairments: the partner corrects form with verbal cues and a light touch if they're okay with it.
- Students with an injury: choose a hold that doesn't load the injured area, or act as timer and scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- Improve core and leg muscular endurance.
- Keep good form under effort.
- Work together toward a group goal using data.

Teacher tip
A poster-board graph hanging in the gym motivates far more than a sheet in a folder; if you prefer digital, use a shared spreadsheet. Common mistake: holding with sagging hips to bank more seconds, so the timer must stop the clock.
