Scooter Board Tag on Wheels
A tag game where everyone moves seated on a scooter board, pushing with their hands, so a classmate who uses a wheelchair or has difficulty with their legs plays on equal terms. Students build arm strength, dodging skills, and an inclusive mindset.
How to play
- Mark a 20 x 20 m (65 x 65 ft) area with cones and split the class into two waves of 12 or 13, one per scooter board.
- Teach the position (2 minutes): sit in the middle of the board, legs tucked, hands pushing in front of the body and away from the wheels.
- The first wave enters with two taggers in pinnies. A player tagged on the shoulder takes the pinnie; nobody is out.
- The other wave is the "pit crew": they count pinnie handoffs and watch the boundaries. Waves switch every 2.5 minutes.
- After two turns per wave, add four cones as safe bases where players may stay for 5 seconds at most.
Rules
- No crashing or ramming with the board.
- Hands always out front, away from your own and others' wheels.
- Never stand or lie on the scooter board.
- A student who uses a wheelchair plays in it, following the same rules.
Variations
Easier
Taggers crawl while everyone else rides a scooter board.
Standard
Two taggers, pinnie switch on each tag, and 2.5-minute waves.
Harder
Four taggers and bases that move every minute.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins in their wheelchair; if very fast, they tag with a pool noodle or need two touches.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: signal changes visually and let the student start on the pit crew.
- Skill level: stronger students push with only one hand.
Learning goals
- Move confidently on wheels by pushing with the arms.
- Dodge and decide quickly in a chasing game.
- Experience a game where everyone starts on equal footing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scooter boards: 13
- pinnies: 4
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Check the wheels and have students tie back long hair and tuck in loose clothing. A short closing talk about playing "everyone on wheels" gives the activity real meaning.
