Scooter Board Moving Wagon
Groups of five turn a mat placed on two scooter boards into a moving wagon and haul equipment from a warehouse to the other end of the gym without dropping anything. Students work on planning, sharing roles, and controlling the wagon when pushing and stopping.
How to play
- Make five groups of five; each group places a thin mat on two scooter boards and marks its warehouse and new home with cones about 50 feet apart (3 min).
- The central warehouse holds assorted equipment: hoops, balls, and cones, each with a point value (ball 1, cone 2, hoop 3) (1 min).
- The group assigns roles: two push, two steer from the sides, and one organizes the load and says when to go (2 min).
- On each trip, the group loads the wagon, pushes it at a walk to its home, unloads, and returns; anything that falls off goes back to the warehouse (6 min).
- Rotate roles every two trips so everyone pushes, steers, and organizes (4 min).
- At the end, count each home's points, and each group explains its loading strategy (4 min).
Rules
- Nobody rides on the wagon; it only carries equipment.
- Push at a walk, never a run, and stop before reaching the cones.
- Keep hands on the edges of the mat, never underneath, so fingers don't get caught by the wheels.
Variations
Easier
Load anything with no points and use a short, straight route.
Standard
Wagons of five, equipment with point values, and a role switch every two trips.
Harder
Add a cone zigzag on the route or carry an earth ball that two people must hold in place.
Adaptations
- Students who use wheelchairs: take the organizer and guide role, starting each trip and checking the load, or push the wagon with a pole from the chair.
- Students with autism or organizational difficulties: get a card showing their role and the steps to follow.
- Students with lower fitness: take more trips as a side guide and fewer as a pusher.
Learning goals
- Plan as a group how to load and move the equipment.
- Take on different roles and rotate them fairly.
- Control the wagon's speed and direction when pushing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scooter boards: 10
- mats: 5
- hoops: 10
- balls: 15
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Check the wheels and the floor. Stress that hands always stay on top of the mat, since that is the main risk in this activity.
