School Steeplechase with Foam Barriers
A school version of the 3,000 m steeplechase: an 800-1,200 m run around a loop with low barriers and a dry water jump made of mats. Students build endurance, learn to clear obstacles without losing rhythm and discover a traditional Olympic event.
How to play
- Set up a 200 m loop with 3 barriers (low hurdles at 16-20 inches) and a dry water jump: one barrier followed by two mats on the ground to land on and run off (4 min).
- Explain and demo clearing a barrier: lead with one leg without jumping high; at the water jump, plant a foot on the mat and run out with a long stride. Stepping on the barrier is allowed (3 min).
- Technique practice: 2 laps at a jog clearing each barrier with whichever lead leg feels natural (4 min).
- Race in two waves: half the class runs 4 laps (800 m) while partners time them and count laps (6 min).
- Switch roles for the second wave (6 min).
- Discussion: how it differs from a flat race and a quick history of the steeplechase, which began as cross-country races between church steeples (2 min).
Rules
- Every barrier must be cleared; going around one means repeating the lap.
- You may step on the barrier or put a hand on it to get over.
- Pass between obstacles, never right before one.
- Safety: use barriers that tip over on impact and non-slip mats at the water jump.
Variations
Easier
Replace the barriers with poles at 8 inches and run 600 m.
Standard
800 m with 3 low barriers and a dry water jump each lap.
Harder
1,200 m with barriers at 24 inches and a negative split as the goal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a parallel loop without barriers, with direction-change zones instead of obstacles.
- Visual impairment: high-contrast barriers and a guide who calls "barrier in three steps."
- Lower fitness level: 2 laps instead of 4, using the same clearing technique.
Learning goals
- Clear obstacles while running without losing rhythm.
- Develop aerobic endurance in a varied format.
- Learn the origin and basic rules of the steeplechase.
Equipment for a class of 25
- low hurdles: 4
- mats: 2
- cones: 12
- stopwatches: 13
Teacher tip
Students tend to stutter-step before the barrier; place a cone 5 m before it to set up the stride. Check that the water jump mats have not shifted after each wave.
