School Goaltimate with a Cone Goal
A disc game based on Goaltimate: both teams attack the same cone goal and score when a pass travels through the goal and a teammate catches it on the other side. It calls for getting open, safe short passes, and modified ultimate rules.
How to play
- On each field, set a goal of 2 cones 3 m (10 ft) apart in the center of a semicircle with a 12 m (40 ft) radius marked with cones. Set up 3 fields for teams of 4 in pinnies; if one student is left over, they play as a neutral on offense (2 min).
- Ultimate rules: no running with the disc, 3 steps to stop, pivot on one foot, and the marker counts out loud to 8. Defenders stay 1 m away with no contact.
- Before attacking the goal, a team must first move the disc outside the semicircle with a pass. This is called 'clearing' it.
- A team scores 1 point when a pass goes between the cones, from either side, and a teammate catches it. The same team keeps the disc but must clear it again.
- Possession switches on a drop, an interception, or a stall. The team that wins the disc must also clear it before attacking.
- Play 2 games of 7 minutes against different teams, with a 2-minute break to talk about getting open.
Rules
- Nobody may park between the goal cones.
- No contact: the marker may not touch the disc while it's in the thrower's hand.
- Safety: use soft discs only and never throw at anyone's body.
Variations
Easier
Make the goal 5 m wide and drop the stall count.
Standard
A 3 m goal, the clearing rule, and a count to 8.
Harder
A 2 m goal, and each score needs at least three passes after clearing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair can score by catching within 1 m of the goal and gets a 10-second count.
- Hearing impairment: the marker counts on their fingers as well as out loud.
- Skill level: a student who struggles to throw can make short 2 m passes with no marker on them.
Learning goals
- Get open in the spaces around the goal.
- Throw and catch a disc safely in game situations.
- Play by modified, no-contact ultimate rules and call your own fouls.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft flying discs: 6
- cones: 30
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
The usual problem is the whole team crowding the goal, so remind them about clearing and that the open space is away from the cones. Keep spare discs at each field.
