Scarves to Balls: Color-Level Cascade Stations
A progression of the three-object cascade across three color stations: scarves (green), beanbags (yellow), and balls (red). Each student decides when to move up by passing a checkpoint test, building coordination, self-assessment, and persistence.
How to play
- Mark three zones with green, yellow, and red cones; each has a basket of its equipment and a card with the checkpoint test (2 min).
- Explain: to move up a color you need 10 cascade tosses in a row with three objects, or 6 in the red zone to earn the juggling diploma (2 min).
- Everyone starts at green with scarves: one scarf hand to hand, then two crossing in an X, and finally three (6 min).
- 12 minutes of free practice: everyone works in their zone and, when they think they can pass, shows a classmate who counts (12 min).
- Anyone stuck for more than 4 minutes may drop down a color to rebuild confidence, then move back up (included in the time above).
- Wrap-up: each student stands by the cone of the color they reached and shares one tip that helped them (3 min).
Rules
- Practice facing a wall or a bench so objects don't fly far.
- A classmate always counts the checkpoint test, never you.
- Each zone keeps its own equipment; don't carry it to another zone.
- Ask for help by raising your hand, not by shouting.
Variations
Easier
Lower the checkpoint to 5 tosses in a row at every color.
Standard
Checkpoint of 10 tosses at green and yellow and 6 at red.
Harder
In the red zone, go for 20 tosses or start and finish with one ball tossed under the leg.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice seated at a desk, which stops falling objects and avoids bending down.
- Autism: show the three zones in a picture schedule and give a one-minute warning before each change.
- Skill level: students who can already cascade with balls coach in the green zone.
Learning goals
- Perform a three-object cascade through a step-by-step progression.
- Judge their own level and decide when to move up.
- Keep up effort on a challenging task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 75
- beanbags: 45
- juggling balls: 45
- colored cones: 6
Teacher tip
The key to the cascade is tossing in an X at eye level instead of handing objects across; a quick drawing on the whiteboard helps it click. Don't force anyone onto balls: the pattern is learned with scarves too.
