San Miguel's Wheel: Turn-Around Circle Game
A traditional singing circle game: the circle walks around holding hands and, at the end of each verse, the child named turns around and keeps holding hands facing out, until everyone has turned. Students work on rhythm, group coordination, and spatial awareness.
How to play
- Circles of 8 to 10 holding hands. You sing the song once while students listen seated (2 min).
- The circle walks to the beat. At the end of the verse, a child is named, who turns around without letting go and keeps facing out (1 min per round).
- Change the circle's step every round: walking, side steps, tiptoes, low squat walk, or little gallops (5 min).
- When everyone faces out, do it in reverse: each child named turns back to face in (3 min).
- To wrap up, discuss which step was hardest to keep without breaking the circle (1 min).
Rules
- The circle never lets go, not even when someone turns.
- Move to the beat of the song without yanking.
- Safety: gallops and squat walks are done slowly with plenty of space.
Variations
Easier
Just walking, with help from the neighbor to turn around.
Standard
A different step each round, and the named child turns.
Harder
The child named picks the next step, and the circle changes direction every time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins in a wheelchair as part of the circle while classmates adjust their speed; instead of turning, they switch hands.
- Hearing impairment: signal the end of the verse with a clear hand gesture.
- Students with autism or shyness: they may ask not to be named in the first rounds and start beside a trusted friend.
Learning goals
- Move as a group to the rhythm of a song.
- Keep your bearings when the circle changes which way it faces.
- Enjoy a traditional singing game.
Teacher tip
Name the students who help keep the circle steady first. With younger kids, use small circles so everyone turns quickly.
