Rubber Shot Put Accuracy: Three in the Band
A standing rubber shot put where the goal isn't distance but landing three in a row inside a 1-meter band each student chooses. It locks in the putting technique and consistency before chasing maximum distance.
How to play
- Review the putting technique: shot tucked against the neck, elbow high, leg drive and a final push, never a throw from the arm (3 min).
- Each student takes three practice puts to estimate their distance and places two cones 50 cm in front of and 50 cm behind that mark (4 min).
- Rounds of three puts in a row: each shot landing in the band scores one point, and three out of three earns a bonus point (8 min).
- Anyone who lands three in a row moves their band 50 cm farther out and tries again (4 min).
- Reflection: which part of the technique gives the most consistency (1 min).
Rules
- Put only on the judge's signal, and everyone retrieves together, never while someone is putting.
- The shot is pushed from the neck; arm throws don't count and are repeated.
- Putting areas are 15 feet apart and everyone puts in the same direction.
- Rubber shots weigh 2 to 4 kg, chosen by each student.
Variations
Easier
The band is 2 m wide and students put a 2 kg medicine ball.
Standard
Standing rubber shot put with a 1-meter band and three tries in a row.
Harder
Add a side shuffle before the put while keeping the same band.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: puts from a locked wheelchair with a 2 kg shot and a band set to their distance.
- Visual impairment: a partner claps at the landing area and calls out the distance after each put.
- Wrist injury: pushes with the healthy hand or does a two-handed put with a light ball.
Learning goals
- Lock in shot put pushing technique.
- Develop consistency and control of the movement.
- Set goals that match one's own level independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rubber shots: 10
- cones: 20
- tape measure: 5
Teacher tip
Consistency is a great technique indicator: students who throw from the arm rarely land three in a row. Use rubber or sand-filled shots outdoors, never metal ones.
