Rubber Band Cup Stack Challenge
In groups of four, each student holds a string tied to a rubber band, and together they open and close the band to pick up cups and build pyramids without touching the cups. Students practice teamwork, communication, and fine control of force.
How to play
- Before class, tie four 2-ft strings to each rubber band. Make 6 groups of 4 (and one of 3), each with a band and 10 cups scattered upside down on the floor (2 min).
- When everyone pulls together, the band opens; easing off together closes it around a cup. Practice for 2 minutes moving one cup.
- Three-minute challenges: a 3-cup tower, then a 6-cup pyramid (3, 2, 1).
- A 6-cup pyramid in silence, using only signals agreed on beforehand (3 min). Then a 10-cup pyramid, taken apart without knocking any cups over (5 min).
- Debrief: which way of communicating worked best in each group (2 min).
Rules
- Cups are touched only with the band; a cup touched by hand goes back to the floor.
- Pull gently and don't wrap the string around your fingers.
- Everyone gives an opinion before each attempt.
Variations
Easier
Large cups, a band with 3 short strings, and a 3-cup final pyramid.
Standard
Groups of 4, 2-ft strings, and 6- and 10-cup pyramids.
Harder
Three-foot strings, with one blindfolded student following directions.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group works on a desk at the student's height, and the student can lead the strategy.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast cups and have a partner describe where the band is.
- Grip difficulties: hold the string with a ring or a loose loop around the wrist.
Learning goals
- Coordinate force with teammates to control a shared object.
- Communicate effectively, including without words.
- Suggest and evaluate group strategies.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Plastic cups: 70
- Rubber bands: 10
- Ball of string: 1
Teacher tip
Bring spare bands, since some will snap. The usual problem is one student pulling harder than the rest; have groups count quietly so they pull together.
