Rotating-Partner 2v2 Mini-Volley
Short 2v2 mini-volley games where, after each game, pairs split up and new ones form. Everyone keeps their own score, so everyone ends up playing with everyone.
How to play
- Set up courts of about 4.5 x 9 m with a cord at roughly 2 m and explain the partner-swap system (4 min).
- 3-minute games: underhand serve, up to three contacts per side, and rally scoring. At the end, each player writes down the points their pair won (12 min).
- After each game, one player from each pair moves one court to the right and the other stays, so both partner and opponents change (2 min).
- New round with a bonus rule: if a rally crosses the net three times before ending, both teams get a point (8 min).
- Individual tally and discussion: who did you click with most, and why? (4 min).
Rules
- Each pair makes its own in/out calls; when in doubt, replay.
- Greet your partner and opponents at the start and end.
- Nobody runs into the next court for a ball during live play.
- Walk around the outside of the courts when switching.
Variations
Easier
Catching the first contact and throwing is allowed.
Standard
Up to three contacts with no catching, plus the long-rally bonus.
Harder
Both partners must touch the ball before it goes over, and serves come from the end line.
Adaptations
- Fear of the ball: plays with a soft ball on their own court and chooses whether to catch the first contact.
- Limited mobility: narrower court on their side and one bounce allowed before contact.
- Big skill gaps: the teacher sets the first pairings so the two strongest players don't team up.
Learning goals
- Decide where and how to send the ball in 2v2.
- Adapt to playing with different partners.
- Value long, clean rallies over winning the point.

Teacher tip
With 30 students you need four 2v2 courts plus two active-rest rotations, or six courts if space allows. Mark the rotation direction with arrows on the floor so the swaps are fast.
