Ropeless Human Chain Tug-of-War
Two chains of three students holding each other around the waist face off without a rope: the leaders grip forearms and the whole group pulls to bring the other team past a line. Students practice coordinated pulling, communication, and safe contact.
How to play
- Form trios of similar weight; on a row of mats, use cones to mark a center line and two lines 6 feet away (3 min).
- Practice the chain without resistance: each student holds the waist of the one ahead and the leaders grip forearms (2 min).
- On "one, two, go!", both chains pull; the chain that makes the other leader step on its line wins, with a 15-second limit.
- If a chain lets go, the point goes to the other team. Play 3 duels, changing the order in the chain (4 min).
- Winning trios move one mat to the right and repeat twice; at the end, each trio shares the signal they used to pull together (9 min).
Rules
- Leaders grip forearms, never hands or necks.
- On "stop", everyone eases off slowly together.
- Always on mats, with no sideways pulling or twisting.
Variations
Easier
Pairs instead of trios; moving the opponent one step is enough.
Standard
Trios, 6-foot line, and 15 seconds.
Harder
Groups of four, and the losing chain may call in a reinforcement for 5 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as line judge or as a seated last link who holds on without moving.
- Hearing impairment: agree on a visual finger count to start and stop.
- Fitness level: place the weaker student in the middle of the chain.
Learning goals
- Coordinate effort with shared signals.
- Hold a grip and pulling posture for several seconds.
- Put the group's safety ahead of winning.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 12
- cones: 18
Teacher tip
Have each chain invent its own "pull!" call: it greatly improves coordination. Watch the last student, who tends to lean back too far and falls most often.
