Rolling Safe Bus Tag
A tag game with a safe zone that moves: four drivers carry a long rope tied in a circle at waist height, and anyone holding it is safe for five seconds. The bus keeps walking around the court, so students have to chase down safety. Students practice locomotor skills, attention, and teamwork.
How to play
- Tie the ends of a 25-foot long rope into a circle. Four drivers hold it at waist height, spread out, and carry it at a walk around a 20 x 20 m area (2 min).
- Pick 3 taggers in pinnies. Everyone else is a passenger running freely in the area.
- On the whistle, taggers chase. A passenger who grabs the bus rope with one hand is safe while counting out loud to five.
- At five, they must let go and move at least three steps away before boarding again. No more than four passengers can hold on at once.
- A tagged player puts on the pinny and the tagger becomes a passenger. Switch drivers every 2 minutes.
- Play 5 rounds; in the last ones, add a second bus and one more tagger.
Rules
- The bus always walks; drivers never run or yank the rope.
- Grab the rope from outside the circle, without stepping inside or ducking under it.
- Taggers may not camp next to the bus.
- No more than four passengers holding on; if it's full, keep running.
Variations
Easier
The bus stays parked in the middle and passengers are safe for eight seconds.
Standard
A moving bus, five seconds of safety, and a maximum of four passengers.
Harder
With two buses, drivers can change direction when the teacher calls "Turn!"
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can drive from a wheelchair with the rope resting on the armrest, or be a passenger with a bus that comes to them.
- Autism or shyness: the student can start as a driver, a calm and structured role, before becoming a passenger.
- Fitness level: students with lower fitness can stay safe for eight seconds instead of five.
Learning goals
- Move with changes of speed to reach a moving safe zone.
- Cooperate as drivers to move the bus with control.
- Respect the safe zone's time and capacity limits.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 1
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
Check the rope knot before starting and have drivers face outward. If a crowd builds up by the bus, increase the step-away distance.
