Rolling Hoop Disc Target
In groups of four, one student rolls a large hoop down a lane while the others try to throw a soft disc through it as it moves. Students work on backhand accuracy and judging the path of a moving target.
How to play
- Make groups of 4 with 3 discs and one large hoop. Use cones to mark a 12 m (40 ft) lane and, 4 m (13 ft) away and parallel to it, a throwing line (2 min).
- Still hoop: the roller holds the hoop upright at arm's length, standing beside it, not behind it. Each thrower makes 3 backhand throws trying to go through it (3 min).
- Rolling hoop: the roller rolls the hoop down the lane from one end; the three throwers, spread along the line, throw one at a time as the hoop passes in front of them.
- Scoring: through the hoop is 3 points and touching it is 1. Each group keeps its own score (4 min).
- Rotate the roller after every pass, and nobody picks up discs until the roller calls 'Collect!'
- Final progression: move the throwing line back to 6 m and add forehand throws (5 min).
Rules
- Only throw when the hoop is in front of you, never toward the roller.
- Nobody steps into the lane while discs are in the air.
- Safety: the roller always walks behind the hoop, out of the line of fire.
Variations
Easier
Roll the hoop slowly or hold it still the whole time, with the line at 3 m.
Standard
Rolling hoop at 4 m with backhand throws.
Harder
Line at 6 m, forehand throws, and a faster roll.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair throws from the line and can roll the hoop by pushing it with a pole.
- Visual impairment: wrap the hoop in reflective tape and have a partner call 'Now!' as it passes.
- Skill level: a student who struggles can throw at a still hoop while others aim at the rolling one.
Learning goals
- Throw a backhand accurately at a target.
- Anticipate the path of a moving target.
- Take turns and follow the group's safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft flying discs: 18
- hoops: 6
- cones: 18
Teacher tip
Many kids throw after the hoop has already gone by, so tell them to lead it a little. Use your biggest hoops so students hit the target early and stay motivated.
