Roll-the-Die Tabata
Two Tabata blocks (8 rounds of 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off) where a giant die decides the exercise for every round. Students build cardio endurance and bodyweight strength and learn to pace themselves in a high-intensity format.
How to play
- Groups of 6 sit in a semicircle, each on a yoga mat, facing their group's giant die. A wall chart lists the six faces: 1 squats, 2 mountain climbers, 3 jumping jacks, 4 plank shoulder taps, 5 alternating lunges, 6 wild card chosen by the group (3 min).
- During each 10-second rest, a different student rolls the die along the floor and calls out the exercise for the next round.
- Long whistle: the 20-second work interval starts; double whistle: rest. Everyone silently counts their own reps.
- Block 1: 8 rounds back to back (4 min). At the end, students take a 15-second pulse count and multiply it by four.
- 2-minute recovery walking and getting water; the group swaps the wild card for a new exercise for the second block.
- Block 2: 8 more rounds (4 min) with another pulse check at the end.
Rules
- Work at your own pace: good form comes before rep count.
- Safety: keep 5 ft between mats and roll the die along the floor, never toss it.
- Anyone who feels dizzy or has pain stops, walks, and tells the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Use 15 seconds on and 15 off, and do only one block of 8 rounds.
Standard
Two 20/10 Tabata blocks with a 2-minute recovery between them.
Harder
Roll two dice and split each round into 10 seconds of each exercise.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a seated version of each face (overhead press, trunk rotations, knee lifts, shadow boxing).
- Hearing impairment: the teacher also raises and lowers a colored cone to start and stop each round.
- Lower fitness: every exercise has an easier version (squat to a chair, kneeling plank, marching instead of jumping).
Learning goals
- Sustain hard effort in short intervals while keeping good form.
- Take a pulse count after a block and connect it to perceived effort.
- Manage turns and changes within the group independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant die: 4
- yoga mats: 25
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Demo the easy and hard version of all six faces before starting so nobody stands around unsure.
