Role-Play Rehearsal: Leading Eight-Year-Olds
Groups who will teach a session at an elementary school rehearse it with classmates who play typical eight-year-old profiles: the one who does not listen, the one who gets upset when losing or the one who always wants to go first. This lets them practice group management before the real day.
How to play
- Each leader group (4 students) prepares 10 minutes of its elementary session with the equipment needed (5 min).
- Secretly hand out profile cards to the group acting as children: distracted, impatient, easily frustrated, does not want to join, very competitive (2 min).
- First rehearsal: one leader group runs its part while the other group plays, acting out the profiles in moderation (8 min).
- The children reveal their profiles and explain what helped and what did not; the leaders note two strategies (3 min).
- Second rehearsal with groups switching roles (8 min).
- Share management strategies: giving responsibilities, warning before the end, positive reinforcement (4 min).
Rules
- Profiles are acted out without exaggerating or mocking: they must be believable.
- Leaders may not use a sit-out punishment longer than 30 seconds.
- Call a time-out if a situation gets out of hand, then restart.
- Balls are always thrown underhand, as you would with children.
Variations
Easier
Only two profiles in the group, and the teacher says which ones.
Standard
Five secret profiles and an 8-minute rehearsal per group.
Harder
Add a surprise midway: a child gets slightly hurt and must be cared for without stopping the session.
Adaptations
- Autism: the student is given the role of support leader or a simple profile described in writing.
- Hearing impairment: the leader group adds visual supports to its explanations.
- Injury: takes part as an observer with a checklist of strategies to spot.
Learning goals
- Anticipate common group-management situations in elementary school.
- Apply positive strategies to keep everyone engaged and getting along.
- Revise their own session based on the rehearsal experience.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 12
- cones: 20
- hoops: 10
- rubber balls: 10
Teacher tip
If possible, ask the elementary school for real information about the group to adapt the profiles. Remember the goal is learning to redirect, not to make fun of children.
