Rocket Ride to the Rainbow Planets
A space movement story: kids blast off like rockets and land on colored planets, and each planet makes them move a different way. They practice body control, colors and changing speed.
How to play
- Scatter hoops on the floor in four colors: red, blue, yellow and green. Each color is a different planet.
- Circle (2 min): show each planet with gestures. Red, volcano: quick little hops. Blue, ice: short careful steps. Yellow, no gravity: slow astronaut steps. Green, jelly: wobble your whole body.
- Blast-off (2 min): crouched in a hoop, count down together from five; on 'zero!' jump up and 'fly' around the gym with arms out.
- Landing (6 min): call a color: 'Land on the red planet!' Everyone finds a hoop of that color; lots of kids can share a hoop. They do that planet's move until the tambourine sounds, then fly again.
- Meteor shower (3 min): when the tambourine shakes fast, crouch and cover your head; when it stops, fly again.
- Back to Earth (2 min): slow landing, lie down and turn off the engines with slow breaths.
Rules
- Everyone fits in a hoop: nobody is left without a planet.
- Fly without bumping, looking for open space.
- Don't step inside hoops while running so you don't slip.
- Tambourine means fly; a color means land.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only two planets and point to the color.
Standard
Four planets, each with its own move.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, call two colors in a row and visit both planets in order.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: fly in the wheelchair and do each planet's move with arms and trunk.
- Hearing impairment: hold up a hoop of the color instead of calling it.
- More skilled kids invent a new planet; less skilled kids travel holding a buddy's hand.
Learning goals
- Adjust movement to cues for speed and shape.
- Recognize colors during play.
- Control the body when taking off and landing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 20
- hand drum (tambourine): 1
Teacher tip
Act out each planet first with lots of drama. If the group gets too wound up, send them to the yellow planet to slow things down.
