Rock and Roll: Rocker to Forward Roll
A four-step progression that takes students from rocking in a tuck on their backs to a full forward roll. Students work on the egg shape, rotating forward, and coming up to a squat without using their hands.
How to play
- Set up 6 mat lanes with 4 students lined up at each and teach the egg shape: seated, knees to chest, chin down, and back rounded (2 min).
- The rocker: from the egg shape, students rock backward and forward 10 times without letting go of their knees, like a rocking chair (3 min).
- Rock to stand: after three rocks, they push forward into a squat and stand up without using their hands (4 min).
- Wedge roll: squatting at the top of the foam wedge, they place their hands, tuck a beanbag between chin and chest, and roll down the slope (4 min).
- Flat mat roll: repeat on a flat mat, trying to keep the beanbag in place and finishing in a squat (3 min).
- Final show: each group demonstrates a forward roll followed by a balance statue (2 min).
Rules
- Roll on a rounded back; the head takes no weight and only the back of the neck brushes the mat.
- The next student goes only after the previous one has stood up and left the mat.
- Anyone who feels dizzy sits beside the mat until they feel better.
Variations
Easier
Always roll on the wedge, with the teacher supporting the back of the neck with one hand.
Standard
Complete the forward roll on a flat mat and finish in a squat.
Harder
Link two forward rolls in a row and finish standing without using the hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice only the rocker and side-to-side rocking on the mat, or assisted rolls on a wide wedge.
- Autism: preview the sequence with picture cards of the four steps and let the student watch several times before trying.
- Fitness level: fearful students stay with rock to stand; confident rollers help the teacher check classmates' egg shapes.
Learning goals
- Hold the egg shape with a rounded back and chin tucked.
- Perform a forward roll that finishes in a squat.
- Progress step by step at their own comfort level.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 12
- beanbags: 6
- foam wedges: 2
Teacher tip
The beanbag under the chin is the best trick to keep heads tucked. Stand at the wedge lane to fix hand placement and watch that nobody pushes off their forehead.
