How to play
- Explain the five tests and the scoring sheet with clear criteria (5 min).
- Teams set up the route: start with check, slalom, look back and signal, stop sign, and braking box (8 min).
- Round one: half the class takes the test while the other half scores in pairs (12 min).
- Round two with roles swapped (12 min).
- License handout: each student gets their sheet with two strengths and one thing to redo (5 min).
- Take down the course and suggest improvements to it (3 min).
Rules
- Sheets are filled in with observable criteria, not opinions.
- Nobody fails: anyone who misses a test retakes it at the end.
- Helmet and pre-ride check are part of the test.
- Only one rider per section of the course.
Variations
Easier
Three tests, scored with the teacher alongside.
Standard
Five tests scored in pairs.
Harder
Add a random surprise test (simulated flat, roundabout or bump).
Adaptations
- Students with a visual impairment: adapted test with sound guidance and tasks on foot with the bike.
- Students with limited mobility: test in a wheelchair, or with an expanded theory and bike-check section.
- Students with test anxiety: get one unscored practice run first.
Learning goals
- Show basic safety skills on wheels.
- Assess with objective criteria and respect.
- Identify strengths and areas to improve.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bicycles: 12
- kick scooters: 6
- helmets: 30
- cones: 30
- chalk: 6
- scoring sheets: 30
- pencils: 15
Teacher tip
Build the sheet with yes/no boxes per criterion (for example, 'looks back without drifting more than a wheel width'). Students bring bikes with a signed permission slip, or borrow them from the city or local police; if you are short, pairs take turns.
