Ribbon Ring Race: Spear the Ring
An on-foot version of the ribbon race from small-town festivals: students jog under a rope hung with rings and ribbons and try to spear one with the tip of a foam noodle without stopping. Students work on accuracy while moving and eye-hand coordination.
How to play
- Tie a long rope between two posts at students' shoulder height and clip 8 Ringo rings to it with clothespins, each with a colored ribbon tied on (3 min).
- Form 4 lines of 6, each with a noodle, 40 ft from the rope; a cone marks where to start jogging (1 min).
- One at a time, each student jogs holding the noodle with both hands, aims at the ring in their lane, and tries to spear it while passing under; they return along the side and hand off the noodle (10 min).
- Each ring earned scores a point for the line; a lane helper rehangs it. Switch lanes every 4 minutes (included in the time above).
- Final round: each line picks two riders for a three-try showdown, then everyone shares what helped them hit the ring (6 min).
Rules
- Always carry the noodle pointing forward, never swinging it or using it on anyone.
- Only one runner per lane; the next goes once the previous one passes the rope.
- Safety: jog, don't sprint, and nobody stands in front of the rope while someone is running.
Variations
Easier
Walk through with larger rings (small plastic hoops).
Standard
Jog and spear Ringo rings hung at shoulder height.
Harder
Hang rings at different heights and give more points for the smaller or higher ones.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student goes through in a wheelchair or walking, with the ring hung lower and near the edge of the lane.
- Visual impairment: a partner claps as they get close to the ring, and rings are a high-contrast color.
- High fitness: the student must spear two rings hung 6 ft apart in a row.
Learning goals
- Coordinate running with a precise move using an implement.
- Adjust speed to hit the target without losing control.
- Learn about a traditional festival competition.
