Refereed Beach Volleyball with Side Switches Every 7
2v2 beach volleyball matches run by a student referee and scorekeeper using the rules of the beach game: sets to 21, a side switch every 7 points, and no open-hand dinks. Students learn the rules, how to run a match, and how to respect officiating.
How to play
- Spend 5 minutes explaining: sets to 21 (or to 15 today), switch sides every 7 total points, no open-hand dinks, and clean sets only.
- Groups of 6 per court: two pairs play, one student referees with a whistle and one keeps the scoresheet.
- The referee whistles the serve, faults (net, double contact, four hits, crossing the centerline), and side switches.
- Play to 15 points or 9 minutes; when the game ends, the officiating pair rotates in for the losing pair.
- Play two 10-minute rounds plus 3 final minutes discussing close calls.
Rules
- Only each pair's captain may ask the referee for a clarification.
- Side switches are quick, with no break.
- For safety, no diving on a hard court, and cones stay outside the court.
Variations
Easier
Referee only the net, the centerline, and the number of touches.
Standard
Adapted beach volleyball rules with a side switch every 7 points.
Harder
Add the technical timeout at 21 total points and a full official scoresheet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as head referee standing on a bench by the net.
- Hearing impairment: the referee pairs the whistle with official hand signals.
- Lower skill level: one bounce is allowed on the first touch.
Learning goals
- Learn the specific rules of beach volleyball.
- Referee and keep score for a match independently.
- Accept officiating calls with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 4
- nets: 4
- cones: 32
- whistles: 4
Teacher tip
Double contact on sets is the hardest call; agree on clear criteria with the class before starting. Have one whistle per court and sanitize it between users.
