How to play
- In a circle, the teacher shows the signals for steps (rolling the fists over each other), double dribble, offensive foul and two-minute suspension (two fingers up) (2 min).
- The whole group copies them in slow motion while hearing when each is used (2 min).
- Pairs: one makes a signal slowly and the other names the violation and how to avoid it (3 min).
- Wrap-up: each person names the violation they commit most often (1 min).
Rules
- Slow, controlled movements.
- Listen to whoever is speaking.
- No mocking corrections.
- Take turns.
Variations
Easier
Only two signals.
Standard
Four signals.
Harder
Chain two signals and have the partner rebuild the play.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: very accessible; classmates can also learn the sign for each violation.
- Visually impaired students: the partner describes the signal or guides their hands.
- Limited mobility: all signals use the arms and can be done seated.
Learning goals
- Recognize basic referee signals.
- Link each signal to its rule.
- Cool down with a calm task.
Teacher tip
If you're unsure of an exact signal, check the federation rulebook before class. It works great before a session with student referees.
