Recess by Intensity Zones: Calm, Moderate and Vigorous
The class designs and tests a schoolyard split into three intensity zones so any student at school can find their place at recess. Heart rate and the Borg scale are used to check that each zone really produces the planned intensity.
How to play
- Split the yard into three zones with colored cones: green (calm), yellow (moderate) and red (vigorous); three groups prepare one game for each zone (5 min).
- First round: one third of the class leads their zone and the rest play freely wherever they want for 5 minutes (5 min).
- At the whistle, everyone takes a 15-second pulse, gives their Borg rating and writes it on the zone card (2 min).
- Second round: the leading group rotates and data are collected again (6 min).
- Compare the data: if the red zone stays under 140 bpm or the green zone goes over 110, the group adjusts its game (4 min).
- Wrap-up: decide how to mark the zones in the real schoolyard and how many leaders each one needs (3 min).
Rules
- Players may switch zones whenever they want, entering from the side.
- The red zone uses only foam balls and has no contact.
- Leaders do not play: they observe, encourage and keep things safe.
- Pulse is taken standing still and in silence.
Variations
Easier
Only two zones, calm and active, with one game each.
Standard
Three intensity zones with pulse and Borg checks over two rounds.
Harder
Each zone must offer two difficulty levels, and the time each student spends in it is recorded.
Adaptations
- Controlled heart condition or asthma: stays in green or yellow and records data for others.
- Autism: the green zone includes a predictable, quiet spot for solo play.
- Visual impairment: zone borders are also marked with a rope on the ground, plus a support buddy.
Learning goals
- Link the type of game to the physiological intensity it produces.
- Use heart rate and the Borg scale to validate a proposal.
- Design a recess that serves different interests and fitness levels.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 10
- foam balls: 6
- cards: 3
Teacher tip
Have a backup game ready for each zone in case one does not work. The data collected help justify the project to the school leadership team.
