Rapid Court Setup for Tournament Day
In groups, students race to set up a mini-volleyball court from a diagram, including the scorer's table, waiting area and first-aid station. Another group inspects it with a safety checklist, a test game is played, and it's taken down in order. It teaches event logistics and teamwork.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 and give each a diagram with measurements (12x6 m / 40x20 ft court, table, waiting area and first-aid station) and the checklist. Each group assigns roles: setup lead, two measurers and two carriers (3 min).
- Timed setup, 6 minutes max: measure with the tape, mark the corners with tape, put up posts and net and mark zones with cones (6 min).
- Cross-inspection: each group checks another group's court with the checklist (net at the right height, posts stable, 2 m / 6 ft clear to the wall, no cones inside the playing area). Each failed item adds 20 seconds to their time (3 min).
- 4-minute 4v4 test game between neighboring groups to make sure the court works; the extra player logs any problems found (5 min).
- Takedown and storage: equipment goes back to the storage room in the order shown on the diagram; the group with the lowest total time wins (3 min).
Rules
- Posts are carried by two people, never dragged.
- Lift equipment with knees bent and back straight.
- Nobody plays until the court passes inspection.
- Safety: nobody hangs from the net or posts.
Variations
Easier
Simpler diagram, no clock and the teacher helps with the inspection.
Standard
Timed setup, cross-inspection, test game and takedown.
Harder
Each group must also set up a second cross-court and draw a layout for the entire gym.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes the setup lead or inspector role with the checklist.
- Autism or need for structure: a diagram with numbered steps and one fixed task.
- Advanced players: as setup lead, must cut the time without skipping any safety item.
Learning goals
- Set up a sports facility from a diagram.
- Check the safety of a play space with a checklist.
- Coordinate team roles to meet a deadline.
