Race Walking: Technique and Partner Relay
Students learn the two basic rules of race walking and apply them in a partner relay where a classmate judges with colored cards. Students work on step coordination, hip and arm technique, and fair play.
How to play
- Mark a 100 m loop with cones. Explain the two rules: one foot always on the ground, and the front leg straight when it lands (2 minutes).
- Progression in lines: walk fast with arms bent at 90 degrees, then stress the heel landing, and finally let the hips follow the stride (5 minutes).
- In pairs, one walks 50 m while the other watches with two cards: yellow for a bent knee or both feet off the ground, green for good form. Switch roles each leg (4 minutes).
- Partner relay: each walks 100 m and tags their partner's hand. Three laps per pair, judged by another pair (6 minutes).
- Each yellow card adds 5 seconds to the pair's time; compare results (2 minutes).
- One-minute wrap-up: which rule was hardest to follow when going fast?
Rules
- If someone runs, the judge shows yellow and they must slow down.
- Judges stand outside the loop, beyond the cones.
- Pass on the outside without pushing or cutting in.
- Respect the judge's call and discuss it afterward, not during the race.
Variations
Easier
Only require one foot on the ground, without the straight-knee rule.
Standard
Apply both rules with a judge and cards.
Harder
A 200 m leg per walker, and three yellow cards mean repeating the leg.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as head judge or walk a leg at their own pace with support if needed.
- Hearing impairment: the judge holds the card up clearly and explains it with gestures afterward.
- Lower fitness: shorten the leg to 50 m and allow sitting out one lap.
Learning goals
- Know and apply the basic rules of race walking.
- Coordinate arms, hips, and legs in a fast stride with no flight phase.
- Judge objectively and accept the judge's decisions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
- cards: 26
Teacher tip
At first almost everyone bends the knee when they speed up; have them slow down until the movement becomes automatic. The cards can be colored cardstock so you don't waste equipment.
