Race to the Continent

The gym or field becomes a giant world map with seven continents marked by colored cones. Students swim around the center ocean and, when they hear an animal, landmark, or landscape, sprint to the continent where it belongs. Students practice speed, spatial awareness, and geography.

How to play

  1. Use colored cones to mark seven zones placed like a world map: the Americas on the left, Europe and Africa in the middle, Asia on the right, Australia/Oceania lower right, and Antarctica along the bottom, each with a sign (4 min).
  2. Everyone jogs around the open center, which is the ocean, pretending to swim. Point out where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans would be.
  3. The teacher calls a clue: "kangaroo," "pyramids," "emperor penguin," "Amazon rainforest," "Great Wall." Each student runs to the correct continent within 6 seconds (5 min).
  4. The teacher confirms and everyone heads back to the ocean. Nobody is out; if you guessed wrong, just jog to the right continent.
  5. Part two: the teacher names an ocean and two continents, such as "Cross the Atlantic from South America to Africa," and students travel that route through the ocean zone (3 min).
  6. Take turns letting volunteers call the clues (3 min).
