Quiet, No-Jump Routine for a Vacation Rental
Training in an apartment or a hotel room comes with two limits: little space and neighbors below. Students do and improve a strength and endurance routine inside a 2-meter square taped on the floor, without a single jump or thud, so they can use it in any lodging.
How to play
- Each student tapes a 2 x 2 m square (about 6.5 x 6.5 ft) around their mat; that is their entire space (2 min).
- Explain the challenge: raise the heart rate without making noise. Jumps are replaced by quiet versions: squat with calf raise, slow lunge, slow mountain climber, burpee without the jump (3 min).
- Guided routine in four 3-minute blocks: lower body, push, core and combined; 40 seconds of work and 20 of rest (12 min).
- Noise test: with the class silent, each pair does 30 seconds of their favorite exercise while another pair judges whether anything can be heard (4 min).
- Each student writes their final 15-minute routine with the changes they made to keep it quiet (4 min).
Rules
- Nobody leaves their square during the routine.
- Foot contacts are controlled, landing toes first and lowering slowly.
- If a quiet variation bothers the knee or wrist, pick another one from the list.
Variations
Easier
30-second work and 30-second rest blocks, with knee push-ups.
Standard
Four 40/20 blocks in a 2-meter square, a noise test and a written routine.
Harder
Add a four-second lowering tempo and a fifth block of isometric holds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: does the routine from the wheelchair inside the square, with pushes, rotations and isometric holds.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: block changes are shown with a visual signal and the noise test is judged by floor vibration.
- Higher body weight: the no-impact versions allow moderate intensity without overloading the joints.
Learning goals
- Perform an effective workout in a very small space.
- Adapt high-impact exercises into quiet, safe variations.
- Respect shared-living norms when training in shared spaces.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 30
- tape: 4
- timer: 1
Teacher tip
It works well in a classroom with the desks pushed aside. Point out that intensity comes from tempo and range, not just jumping.
