Quiet Feet Ninja Sprints
A running form game where students are ninjas who must sprint on the balls of their feet so they make no noise, while judges listen with their eyes closed. Students work on active foot strikes, quick steps, and careful listening.
How to play
- Mark 4 lanes of 15 m with cones and flat disc cones at the start and finish; form groups of 6 per lane (2 min).
- Explain: ninjas run "on tiptoe but fast," with short steps and arms swinging; heels barely touch the ground (2 min).
- In each lane, two students are judges: they sit by the finish with their eyes closed and raise a hand if they hear loud footsteps (1 min).
- Two ninjas run at a time per lane; if they finish without a judge raising a hand, they earn a star for the group; if they are heard, they walk back and try again (6 min, switching judges every two runs).
- Speedy ninja round: time the run, and a star counts only if it is silent and under a time the teacher sets (3 min).
- Count the stars and ask: which part of your foot do you land on to stay quiet? (1 min).
Rules
- Each ninja runs only in their lane and slows down after the finish, not at it.
- Judges sit beside the lane, never in it.
- Judges are honest: they raise a hand only when they hear noise.
- Run in sneakers with laces tied.
Variations
Easier
Use 10 m runs and allow a jogging start.
Standard
Use 15 m runs at top speed with no noise.
Harder
Place four poles on the ground one foot apart that runners must step between silently.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: take part as ninjas using their usual way of moving, with the focus on smooth, continuous movement.
- Autism or shyness: may be a judge several times before running, and always run with the same partner.
- Fitness or skill level: the fastest must beat their partner and stay silent; students who tire alternate a ninja run with a judge turn.
Learning goals
- Land on the front of the foot when sprinting.
- Increase step rate with short, quick steps.
- Judge classmates' work honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- flat disc cones: 8
Teacher tip
Many students slow down when trying to be quiet: remind them that ninjas are fast. Pick a smooth surface, not gravel, so the difference in sound is easy to hear.
