Pull-Up Jump Shot Off the Dribble
A progression to learn how to stop the dribble with a jump stop and rise into a mid-range jump shot. It works on balance in the stop, shooting off the dribble, and deciding whether to pull up or keep attacking the rim based on the defender.
How to play
- No more than two pairs per basket, with a cone at each elbow. Demonstrate the jump stop: hard last dribble, both feet at once, knees bent (2 min).
- Stop without a shot: from the wing, 2 dribbles to the cone, jump stop, and pass to the partner, checking for extra steps (3 min).
- Stop and take a small jump shot from the cone while the partner rebounds. Five shots, then switch (4 min).
- Read: the partner closes out on the last dribble. If they stay back, pull up; if they crowd you, drive to a layup. A make with the right decision is 2 points (4 min).
- Each pair records its best set of 10 and talks about what goes wrong when the stop is off (2 min).
Rules
- On the jump stop, both feet land at the same time; otherwise, repeat it.
- The defender in the reading phase doesn't jump into the shooter or touch the arm.
- Safety: land in the same spot you jumped from so you don't step on anyone.
Variations
Easier
One dribble, stop, and set shot one yard from the rim, no jump.
Standard
Two dribbles from the wing, jump stop, and small jump shot.
Harder
Start at half court with a crossover before the stop and a live defender.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: stop the dribble with a pause and take a set shot from a comfortable distance.
- Students with autism: place picture cards of the three steps (dribble, stop, shoot) next to the cone.
- Students with less strength shoot from close range with a size 6 ball; advanced students move farther out.
Learning goals
- Stop the dribble with a balanced jump stop.
- Shoot a jump shot off the dribble from mid-range.
- Decide whether to pull up or drive based on the defender's distance.

Teacher tip
If students drift forward on the shot, the stop is too long; ask for a harder, tighter last dribble. Check that they land with bent knees to protect ankles and knees.
