Program Swap: Test-Drive Another Group's Workout
Each group runs a 10-minute workout designed by another group, following only what is written on the card. Then they give feedback with effort data so the authors can improve their design.
How to play
- Each group of 4-5 turns in its workout card (goal, exercises, sets, times, and planned intensity) and draws another group's card (2 min).
- Two minutes of silent reading: the group sets up the listed equipment without asking the authors any questions (3 min).
- They complete the workout exactly as written. One member notes confusing parts and actual times (10 min).
- Afterward, each member gives an RPE, and the group compares it with the planned intensity on the card (3 min).
- Meet with the authors: return the card with two strengths, one specific improvement, and the average RPE (5 min).
- Authors revise their card on the spot and hand in version 2 to the teacher (7 min).
Rules
- Do what is written, even if it looks like a mistake; note the mistake, don't fix it.
- If an exercise on the card seems unsafe, stop and ask the teacher.
- Feedback is about the design, never about people.
- Put all equipment away before the feedback meeting.
Variations
Easier
Cards follow a fixed template, and authors can answer one question.
Standard
Run the workout as written, record effort, and give structured feedback.
Harder
The testing group must also suggest a progression for the following week.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group adapts one exercise per station on the card and evaluates that as part of the design.
- Shy students: write feedback on the card before saying it out loud.
- Different fitness levels: everyone adjusts intensity to their level and notes it as useful data.
Learning goals
- Test the clarity and effectiveness of a workout program.
- Give and receive constructive, data-based feedback.
- Improve their own design based on a real trial.
Equipment for a class of 25
- task cards: 6
- assorted equipment
- stopwatch: 6
- printed RPE scale: 6
Teacher tip
Make sure cards are finished before class, because the session depends on it. The revision at the end is the key moment, so protect those 7 minutes.
