Pretend Band Instrument Swap
A traditional singing game in which each child mimes playing an instrument while the circle sings a call-and-response tune. When the leader switches to playing a child's instrument, that child must switch to the leader's instrument. Students work on focus, reaction and expressive movement.
How to play
- Students sit or stand in a circle; teach a chant such as "Band leader, band leader, keep your eyes on me, play your part and keep the beat" (2 min).
- Each child picks an instrument different from their neighbor's and mimes it big: drum, violin, trumpet, piano (2 min).
- You start as leader, playing the triangle while everyone chants and plays to the beat (2 min).
- Midway, mime one child's instrument: that child must switch to your triangle right away; if they miss it, they do a fun movement task (4 min).
- Students take turns as leader for one chant each, starting with whoever did a task (5 min).
Rules
- Only the child whose instrument the leader copied switches.
- Tasks are always fun movement tasks, never meant to embarrass anyone.
- If standing, play in your own spot so you don't bump your neighbors.
Variations
Easier
The leader makes eye contact with the child before copying their instrument, and the chant is slower.
Standard
The leader switches several times per chant without warning, and the copied child must react right away.
Harder
Play with two leaders, each with an instrument, and the copied child must switch to the instrument of the leader who copied them.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: choose instruments played with hands and face, such as a flute or harmonica; the game needs no traveling.
- Hearing impairment: seat the student across from the leader and show the beat with a visible body sway.
- Skill level: a child who reacts slowly can have a helper partner who taps their arm when they are copied.
Learning goals
- Keep attention on the leader and react quickly to changes.
- Use pantomime to show how different instruments are played.
- Learn and enjoy a traditional singing game.
Teacher tip
Exaggerate your own pantomime at first, since it sets the group's level of expression. Keep a short list of movement tasks ready so choosing one doesn't slow the game down.
